It's funny when I think about it.... but the more I use linux as a desktop, the more it starts acting like windows. The more programs I have running the more stability trouble it has. Software starts hanging or not responding. I'm contantly having this trouble with firefox. Especially on java or those other graphical sites. etc etc etc. |

| XFS on RHEL |
[May. 6th, 2008|02:52 pm] |
So I was thinking of using XFS on a disk array that I have to build. It looks like RH doesnt support XFS. From what I gather, they seem to think
1) They have in-house expertise in ext3 but not for xfs 2) They believe that xfs doesn't offer any advantages to their customers that ext3 cannot provide.
Number two makes me wonder... Shouldnt it be up to the customer to decide this? Why try to force a customs to your standard or to what you want? Companies are suppose to provide what customers want. I think XFS has been around long enough now that Enterprise Distributions like RH should support it now. |

| Collection agencies |
[May. 2nd, 2008|04:50 pm] |
Gotta love collection agencies! Can you hear the sarcasm?
A few months ago my wife and I found out that we were victims of ID theft and/or fraud. We started getting calls from companies we didnt know saying that we owed them money. On closer examination of our bank account, we saw they our account had also been compromised. So we closed our accounts. Now the collection agencies are calling..... They really dont care about the causes or if it's fraud or stolen ID. They just want money. Thats what drives them! They always think your lying. Granted most of the people are but it doesnt mean everyone is and I thought we arent suppose to stereotype nowadays?
I'm trying to straighten all this mess out but it hasnt been fun or easy. We dont know if whoever is calling now is something we really do owe money or not. We dont have any real debt so I cant imagine that we owe anyone money but sometimes something might slip through a crack. The collection agencies seem to refuse to provide any proof that this debt is ours. Because if it isnt ours, they dont get paid. So now begins the long process of straightening this all out. |

| Cluster Suite |
[Apr. 10th, 2008|11:32 am] |
|
So I use CentOS and it's cluster suite with gfs for our main nodes that need failover capabilities. I didnt install it but I have to admin it. Needless to say that it hasnt worked right since I became admin of it. I'm at the point now where I want to just format the machines and start over again with them. The failover works fine but it doesnt like to fail back over at times. cman just ends up hanging and timing out.... I have yet to figure out why. |

| What to write about? |
[Apr. 24th, 2006|03:34 pm] |
|
I originally began this as a way to write about work and computer related stuff. Now I decided to write about anything I feel like.... Computers are my work. I work for MySQL. I love it! Why??? Well, I like databases and I love opensource. So me working for MySQL is a good thing as its a opensource database company. Prior to working on computers, I did various jobs. Things like Janitor, worked in a hardware store, worked in a deli, worked in a production line.... I never knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Then while I was in college and working, I needed to do word processing and printing so I decided to get a computer. (I wont mention my dreams at the time of becoming a online stock trader). I had computers growing up, names that come to mind are "VIC 20" and "Apple IIc". I never did a lot with them. Anyways, back to getting a computer. I talked to my Dad and he agreed to pay for half of it. So I consulted with a friend and found a computer in a magazine and bought it. I needed lots of help when I got it. I must of ruined the OS (Windows) many times and had to re-install. But I learned a lot and I got bit by the computer bug. I never felt so interested in something before that. After a while I got my first computer job. The rest is history.... I've worked in computers ever since and I dont see myself ever leaving the field. I used to hear people talk about loving there job and what they do (my Dad especially) but until I worked in the computer field I never understood and never believed I could find my calling like that. I had fears of searching my whole life and not finding it. And that meant not liking what your doing for a job your whole life.... how much would that suck? |

| A sick monday |
[Apr. 17th, 2006|10:48 pm] |
So here I am, another Monday. I'm sick today but so is just about everyone else in my family. I recently bought 2 books. One is a mysql book by a co-worker of mine Paul DuBois. And the other is A C++ book called "C++ Primer Plus" by Stephen Prata. I find both are great books. The last mysql I bought was the old "mysql and msql" book which is quite outdated as far as mysql goes..
Today I worked on the upcoming 5.1.9 build. There are a couple of issues with the builds but we are working on them. |

| Yet another monday |
[Apr. 3rd, 2006|02:24 pm] |
So here I am again another Monday...
Today I've mostly been working on builds (well I am on the build team). Building netware builds for the upcoming 5.0.20 release. Everything seems to be going ok so far in that regards. I'm also working on a custom build for a customer. I would call it more of a patch build which is really a release with a patch applied to it. |

| Another Monday |
[Mar. 27th, 2006|09:41 am] |
|
Ok so I've been back from Italy for a week now. I went to the doctors this past Wed and found out I had broke my ribs. They have been bothering me since I tackled my instructor Bill and landed on his knee. This all happened a couple of hours before leaving for Italy so I was in pain most of my trip. Sleeping was/is the hard part. Oh well.... |

| Back from Italy |
[Mar. 20th, 2006|07:59 pm] |
First day back from Italy..... I'm beat! I can hardly keep my eye's open but I've managed so far. Fedora 5 looks to have come out. I managed to download the x86 ISO's at http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/5/i386/iso/ It wasnt the fastest and I couldnt connect a few times because of to many users. |

| Another day at the MySQL Dev Conf |
[Mar. 17th, 2006|09:01 am] |
|
I went to a presentation yesterday about two stage index retrievals. It was presented by Ann with help from Jim. It was very interesting about using the process to speed up index retievals in some situations. All though some of it was over my head, I still enjoyed it and thought (what I understood of) it was a good idea. |

| MySQL Developers Conf |
[Mar. 16th, 2006|02:10 pm] |
|
So... I started working for MySQL in January. This week I'm at the MySQL Dev Conf in Sorrento Italy. I'm meeting the MySQL people. It's nice to actually meet the people I talk to daily on IRC and email. There is a lot of meetings going on (both planned and unplanned) and lots of decisions are being made and lots of ideas are being proposed. It's quite awesome! Karaoke last night was quite humorous.... Did I sing? No! I'm not the singing type I guess. |

| new book |
[Aug. 20th, 2004|08:35 pm] |
So I went to the local book store today and bought "Accelerated C++". This book I like! It's only like 300 pages long and it goes right into teaching you the "useful" parts of C++. The chapters are short but to the point. And like I said earlier they teach you C++! They dont start you out writing C++ programs in a C style. It doesnt take 500 pages to get to Inheritance and classes etc etc etc.... Needless to say I would recommend this book. But I'm not sure if I would recommend it to a beginer programmer as in someone that doesnt know any other language. |

| first entry |
[Aug. 20th, 2004|11:03 am] |
Well I just signed up for this..... seems pretty neat overall.
Anyways I'm trying to learn C++ "on my own". As I've learned perl, and C this way I was hoping it would be easy. But this being my first OO language, it's been a challenge. Anyways it's still pretty fun so far. |
